About the Opportunity

You will be joining Meli’s Financial Counselling Program, which delivers essential services across the Great South West and Wimmera regions, funded by the Commonwealth Department of Social Services (DSS), Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV), and the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation (VRGF). Our services are provided from our office locations in Warrnambool, Geelong, and outreach locations such as Horsham, Portland, and Hamilton. We are also expanding into North West Victoria.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide compassionate, client-focused financial counselling, including case work, advocacy, negotiation, referral, and community education.
  • Support individuals and families to stabilize their financial situations and build long-term financial literacy.
  • Assist clients facing financial distress, including those impacted by family violence and other complex issues.
  • Travel as required across the region, with flexible working arrangements and potential overnight stays.

About You

Whether you're just starting your career or bringing years of experience, you’re passionate about financial counselling and ready to make a difference. This role is adaptable based on your qualifications:

  • A Diploma in Financial Counselling or working towards it. Eligibility for membership of Financial Counselling Victoria (FCVic) and able to meet the standards, training and supervision requirements set by FCVic. 
  • A current knowledge of the practices of financial institutions and of effective service delivery models and the ability to work within such frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise and provide financial information to families and individuals to assist in the resolution of financial issues at various levels including family violence, MARAM practices, crisis intervention, intake and assessment and planned financial counselling. 
  • Proficient in communication, with exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.  

Additional Considerations for the Senior Financial Counsellor Role:

  • You bring at least two years of post-qualification experience in financial counselling
  • You’re equipped to mentor less experienced team members and supervise financial counselling students.
  • You have significant experience handling cases involving family violence and are familiar with MARAM practices.
