About the Role

As a Counsellor / Advocate, you will provide compassionate and effective assessment, counselling, and advocacy services to children, young people, and adults who have experienced torture and trauma. Your role will focus on delivering a variety of interventions to support survivors in addressing the psychological and social impacts of human rights violations. The primary emphasis will be on delivering high-quality counselling for those dealing with complex trauma, helping them navigate their recovery journey.

The key objectives of this role are:

  • Deliver effective and appropriate assessments, counselling and advocacy to clients who are survivors of torture and other traumatic events, and are children, adolescents and families
  • Provide a wide range of interventions designed to address the psychological and social consequences arising from their past experiences of human rights violations
  • Work under the Integrated Recovery Model (FH).

About You

To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • A Relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or equivalent qualifications.
  • Minimum 3 years’ demonstrated experience in delivering therapeutic interventions, counselling, group work interventions, particularly with clients who have experienced complex trauma.
  • Ability to undertake intake assessments, comprehensive psychosocial assessments and risk assessments.
  • Experience advocating on behalf of refugees, asylum seekers, or other vulnerable clients regarding a range of issues related to health, welfare, legal and government.
  • Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity in regards to the provision of support and counselling services for people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds, including working experience working with interpreters to provide effective support.
  • Expert knowledge in trauma and its psychosocial impact on children, adolescents, families and communities.
